BMW 530d ENGINE Problems

The engine code for the 530d is a M57D30, also known as 306D2, engine, these engines are very reliable, strong engines and only start giving issues once they reach around the 120000 mileage mark. The above outline the main causes of engine failure and our job is not to scare you but give you an understanding of what can go wrong and what the associated costs are, if you look after the engine with regular servicing and early diagnostics if any issues arise you will be fine and should have trouble free motoring, these engines if looked after easily go past 250000 miles and we have just been working on one with 350000 miles with the original engine still going strong.

Not Changing Engine Oil on Time

Among the most common cause of failure is the service interval, we highly recommend servicing of oil and oil filter every 5000 miles or so, although BMW have a higher mileage for servicing it is advisable to have only the oil filter and oil changed every 5000 miles and have the engine flushed every 10000 miles; most garages and even BMW do not use engine flush and just drain the oil from the engine, this still leaves residue from previous oil in the engine and will decrease the life of the new oil considerably and if you carry on this practice each time you service the car without flushing the engine you will decrease the life of the oil more and more causing more deposits which in turn will build up and cause the new oil to become contaminated and lead to build up of burnt oil and carbon residue inside the engine which can block the strainer inside the sump causing less oil to go around the engine.

The engine itself is as stated a very strong engine compared to other vehicles and other than internal failure it is more prone to ancillary issues causing the engine to fail.

Swirl Flaps Breakage

if the vehicle is an automatic then swirl flaps inside the inlet manifold are common to break and once they do they get sucked inside the engine and cause damage to the pistons and cylinder head, we would recommend having these blanked and at the same time having the egr and inlet manifold cleaned as once you open these you will find considerable carbon build up.

Will this Affect the Engine Performance?

Blanking the swirl flaps causes no drop in performance and these only actuate at around 16 degrees centigrade and above so for most of the year they are not working, the principle behind the swirl flap is to cause the air going into the engine to become turbulent and having worked on many four and six cylinder diesels with swirl flaps removed we have found them to be an unnecessary component which causes more damage if they fail.


The injectors are a known cause of engine failure and we have seen many instances when the injectors either over fuel or run too lean (under fuel) causing damage to the pistons; a tell tale sign of this is black smoke coming from the exhaust or a white/bluish smoke which smells of diesel and burns the eyes, if you encounter this issue it is a reasonably cheap fix and you can find a set of good injectors for around £400 - £500, with labour being around £175 to change the set.

Turbo Failure

Turbo failure is also common on this particular model and can lead to engine failure if not corrected in time, a sign of turbo issues will be a white smoke (quite thick) which well smell of burning oil and a loss of power intermittently; the turbo for this vehicle is around the £350 mark and labour should be around £200.

DPF Systems

DPF systems can also cause the engine to fail but this is a very rare instance as drivers would feel the problem and loss of power when a DPF becomes blocked way before the engine can be damaged, it is recommended to go on a motorway run every 3-4 weeks with continuous driving for about an hour or so, this lets the DPF reach its regeneration temp which is around 600 degrees centigrade. DPF regeneration is when all the soot and carbon build up inside the DPF is turned into water and other less damaging chemicals.

Normal local driving does not allow for these engines to even get hot let alone reach the temperatures needed for a 'regen' to occur so taking the vehicle on a good motorway run allows this to happen and you should do this on a regular basis to stop the blocking of the DPF, please bare in mind that if any engine warning lights are on then a 'regen' will not take place or if the fuel level is below a certain amount on either side of the fuel tank (full fuel tank is recommended).
