BMW X4 Engines for Sale: Fully Tested Used Units, In-House Reconditioning and Expert Fitting

When you are searching for a BMW replacement engine from the auto market, engine price and reliability are the two common things to look for. There is no denying that a high-quality BMW engine is vital for the vehicle's robust performance on the road. So, when your BMW X4 engine develops some common issues like low oil pressure, heavy knocking, smoke, poor compression or a seized engine, don't panic. BM Engine Works offers high-quality and low mileage BMW X4 engine rebuilding and replacement services at very competitive prices. We first diagnose the fault before recommending repair, rebuild, or complete replacement. This prevents a serviceable turbo, injector or cooling fault from being mistaken for complete engine failure. If internal engine damage is confirmed on our diagnostic results, we can supply and fit a fully tested used engine or a fully reconditioned engine matched to the vehicle.

Our engine stock and workshop coverage includes petrol, diesel and mild hybrid engines for BMW X4 models, from the F26 range to the G02 and high performance F98. We handle xDrive20d models, the M40i, later B58 applications and the BMW X4 M Competition engine. Every match is checked by VIN, engine code, capacity, fuel type, emissions equipment, electronics and ancillary layout. Choose low mileage used engines for a faster, cost controlled replacement, or choose an in-house reconditioned unit for a deeper mechanical reset. Our supply and fit service includes installation, fluid renewal, coding, testing and up to a 12-month warranty, subject to the selected unit and written terms. We keep the service direct: one diagnosis, one confirmed specification and one clearly explained plan before any major work begins.

Engine specifications may vary by vehicle build date and configuration. Your vehicle registration number/VIN and engine code are confirmed before supplying, repairing or replacing an engine.

Common BMW X4 Engine Problems and the Right Engine Solution

Not every engine warning means replacement. We first check stored faults, oil pressure, compression, leak down, cooling pressure, injectors, turbo operation and contamination. The table below links documented X4 issues to the correct workshop response. Build date and VIN still decide whether a specific technical action applies.

BMW X4 Application Common X4 Engine Problems and Warning Signs Right Engine Solution

Early F26 xDrive28i, N20 petrol

Timing chain or oil pump drive wear; whining that rises with engine speed, rattling, timing faults or low oil pressure

Renew the chain drive if the internal condition is sound. Recondition or replace after lost timing, bearing damage or valve to piston contact.

Selected F26 xDrive20d, xDrive30d and xDrive35d diesels

EGR cooler glycol leakage can mix with soot and oil deposits, damage the intake and, rarely, create a fire risk

Check the VIN campaign status, inspect the EGR module and replace faulty parts. Rebuild or replace only if later tests confirm internal engine damage.

F26 xDrive35i, N55 petrol

Seepage or an active leak at the cylinder head cover, oil filter housing or heat exchanger; oil pooling, drips or falling level

Clean and identify the source first. Repair an active leak. Recondition or replace only if prolonged oil loss has damaged internal parts.

2019 G02 M40i, B58M petrol

Split PCV diaphragm; blue/white smoke after starting, whistling, misfires or an engine warning light

Repair the PCV or cylinder head cover and check oil consumption. Recondition only when oil starvation, bore wear or low compression is confirmed.

These faults can spread debris through oilways, damage the turbo or overheat the cylinder heads. BM Engine Works recommends replacement BMW X4 engines only when testing shows major internal damage or when a reliable repair is no longer sensible.

Used, Reconditioned or Rebuilt BMW X4 Engines

A low mileage used engine is usually the quickest route when the code, condition and maintenance record are right. Mileage is verified where possible, but low mileage alone is not proof of health. We inspect each unit before it is approved for supply or fitting. This makes our low mileage used engines a safer choice than an unchecked second hand unit.

Choose a reconditioned BMW X4 engine when you want more internal work completed before installation. We strip, clean, measure and recondition the unit, replacing worn or out of tolerance parts. If your original block and cylinder heads remain usable, we can rebuild the same BMW engine. If damage is beyond repair, we source a compatible replacement engine instead.

Our BMW X4 Engine Reconditioning Process

A reconditioned BMW X4 engine is rebuilt through a controlled technical process. Each stage helps identify the original failure and prevents damaged supporting parts from affecting the completed engine.

  1. Record the fault history, service information, engine code and diagnostic results.
  2. Scan all control units and test compression, oil pressure, coolant system pressure and cylinder leakage where possible.
  3. Drain the fluids and inspect the oil, filter and coolant for metal, fuel, carbon or cross contamination.
  4. Remove the engine and inspect the turbo, injectors, cooling system, intake, exhaust and oil supply.
  5. Strip the engine to its main components, including the block, crankshaft, pistons and cylinder heads.
  6. Clean all reusable parts and remove carbon, sludge, gasket material and oil deposits.
  7. Measure cylinder bores, piston clearances, crankshaft journals, bearing surfaces and deck condition.
  8. Pressure test the cylinder heads and inspect valves, guides, seats, camshafts and sealing faces.
  9. Hone or machine serviceable surfaces and replace damaged bearings, piston rings, seals, gaskets and timing parts.
  10. Reassemble the engine using correct clearances, torque settings and timing procedures.
  11. Flush contaminated oil coolers, pipes and related circuits when technically safe; replace parts that cannot be cleaned fully.
  12. Prime the lubrication system, add the correct oil and coolant, code required components and reset adaptations.
  13. Complete leak checks, temperature monitoring, live data checks, a road test and a final diagnostic scan.

The completed reconditioned engine is checked for oil pressure, coolant control, smooth running, boost operation and fault codes. The vehicle moves to final handover only after these checks are complete.

Which BMW X4 Engine Solution Is Right for You?

The right solution depends on the engine code, internal damage, mileage, service history and how long you plan to keep the vehicle. We inspect the failed engine before recommending an option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common signs include heavy knocking, low oil pressure, poor compression, metal in the oil, severe overheating or a seized engine. Full diagnostics should confirm the damage first.
A tested, low mileage used engine can be reliable when its engine code, condition, mileage and service history are checked before fitting.
It is an engine that has been stripped, cleaned, measured and rebuilt. Worn bearings, seals, gaskets, piston rings and timing parts are replaced where required.
Reconditioning suits an engine with a serviceable block, crankshaft and cylinder heads. Replacement is often better for seized, cracked or severely damaged engines.
The engine is matched using the VIN, engine code, fuel type, capacity, power output, wiring, sensors and emissions equipment.
The work normally takes several working days. The exact time depends on engine availability, internal damage, required parts, fitting and coding.
Some replacement engines require control unit checks, adaptation resets or component coding. This depends on the model, engine and transferred parts.
Only if testing finds wear, damage or oil contamination. The turbo, oil pipes, intercooler and intake system should always be inspected before fitting the engine.
Eligible used and reconditioned engines can include up to 12 months' warranty. Cover depends on written terms, correct installation and scheduled servicing.
