BMW Engine Alert! B58 Engines Taking Charge of 3-Series

How BMW B58 engines compete with N54 and N55 engines in the 3-Series? Is BMW making choices for its customers?

BMW is famous for its powerful and fuel economical engines and they have a massive range for each series. BMW 3-Series engines line-up has been a milking cow for BMW for ages and they dominantly focus on the model line-up by introducing new technologies, improved engines, and making it even more efficient. Recently BMW has introduced a B-family engine for its 3-Series, 5-Series, and several MINI models.

BMW B58 Turbocharged Engine

The latest BMW engine has won the best engine of the year award for 2016 in just a couple of months since it was introduced. It is a 3.0-litre inline six cylinder turbocharged engine, exclusively produced as a part of the Efficient Dynamics modular family.

It is offered in several integrations from 3-, 4-, and 6-cylinder engines to be introduced in several models in the BMW line-up. The B58 turbocharged engine is an improved version of the N-Series engine where N54 and N55 engines are already serving the BMW 3-Series.

BMW N55 Engines

The legendry BMW N55 engines are one of the best engines offered in the market by BMW since their launch. Like a jet turbine, these engines are smooth, powerful, efficient and eco-friendly with minimum levels of noise. Everything a driver want from a 6-cylinder, it offers more than that, but at the end of the day, they must retire but will be missed deeply in the BMW line-up.

The B58 will replace the N55 engine series with similar displacement – technically a tick larger at 2998 cm3 compared to 2979 cm3 – powered by twin turbochargers to make the ride even joyful and lively. Several engine technologies like direct-injection, dual-vanos and Valvetronic systems are acquired from the N55 series of engines.

The B58 Engine Assembly

As it is described that the B58 engines are refined for efficiency, so, technically, the engine block and the cylinder heads are completely re-engineered for extended stroke length by 5mm and bore diameter reduced by 2mm to attain the higher compression ratios.

BMW has exclusively managed the stressed temperatures in the B58 engines by introducing the water to air intercooler integration in the intake junctions.

Engine Encapsulation System

BMW B58 engines are exclusively incorporated engine mounted encapsulation system to retain the engine temperature and its excessive heat for more than 35 hours to help reduce carbon emissions and start-up wear-tear in the winter season. The B58 engine is soon nesting in the 3-Series and 5-Series.
