They’re carefully packaged – the battery is efficiently integrated into the back cabin floor, whereas the motor takes up one half of the space under the boot floor. Go for the 32bhp range-extending two-cylinder petrol specific generator, and you’ll discover it tucked under the boot floor on the opposed side to the electric motor. Keep in mind the petrol engine doesn’t ride the car directly; it simply delivers electricity for the battery or motor.

Along with its powerful electric motor and quite lightweight 1,270kg carbon fiber structure, the BMW i3 is astoundingly fast, too. All thanks to the electric motor’s instantaneous torque, acceleration is swift, and it manages an approximate 0-60mph time of just 7.2 seconds – that’s as quick as the more powerful Audi A3 e-tron.

Adding up the additional weight of the range-extender generator carries the 0-62mph time down a shade to 7.9 seconds, but the variation is barely evident on the road thanks to the electric motor’s instant reaction to a dab on the accelerator.
